Spring break is a great time to relax and have fun, but if you have POTS, it’s important to plan ahead to avoid symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and tachycardia. Here are some essential tips to make the most of your break while managing your condition:
1. Stay Hydrated & Increase Salt Intake
- Drink at least 2-3 liters of water per day.
- Bring electrolyte packets (like Enact) to mix with water.
- Eat salty snacks (pretzels, pickles, salted nuts) to maintain blood volume.
2. Plan for Travel
- On road trips or flights, wear compression socks to prevent blood pooling in your legs.
- Stand up and stretch every 30-60 minutes to keep circulation moving.
- Bring a neck pillow and lie down if needed on long journeys.
3. Beat the Heat
- Avoid direct sun exposure for long periods—heat can worsen POTS symptoms.
- Carry a cooling towel, misting fan, or ice packs if traveling to warm climates.
- Swim or find shaded areas to stay cool outdoors.
4. Pace Yourself & Rest
- Plan activities with breaks to prevent overexertion.
- Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, as they can worsen dehydration.
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep to keep your autonomic system balanced.
With a little preparation, you can have a fun and symptom-free spring break!
