Tips for POTS Patients During Allergy Season

Mar 13, 2025Christopher Kelly

Allergy season can be especially challenging for POTS patients, as symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, and brain fog can worsen due to inflammation, dehydration, and certain allergy medications. Here’s how to manage both conditions effectively:

1. Stay Hydrated & Increase Electrolytes

  • Allergies can cause fluid loss due to sneezing, congestion, and increased mucus production.
  • Drink at least 2-3 liters of water daily with added electrolytes (LMNT, Liquid IV, or Nuun).
  • Eat salty snacks (pickles, broth, salted nuts) to maintain blood volume.

2. Choose POTS-Friendly Allergy Medications

  • Avoid traditional antihistamines like Benadryl and diphenhydramine, as they can cause drowsiness and worsen dizziness.
  • Opt for non-drowsy antihistamines like Claritin (loratadine), Allegra (fexofenadine), or Zyrtec (cetirizine).
  • Nasal sprays (like Flonase or saline rinses) can help without affecting blood pressure.

3. Manage Inflammation & Histamine Response

  • Eat a low-histamine diet if sensitive (avoid aged cheeses, fermented foods, and processed meats).
  • Try natural antihistamines like vitamin C, quercetin (found in apples, onions), and bromelain (pineapple).
  • Use an air purifier and keep windows closed to reduce pollen exposure.

4. Pace Yourself & Listen to Your Body

  • Allergies can increase fatigue and brain fog, so schedule breaks and avoid overexertion.
  • Get enough rest and manage stress to prevent flare-ups.

By staying hydrated, choosing the right medications, and reducing allergens, you can better manage both POTS and seasonal allergies! 🍃🚰🤧
